Can this unit be mounted ok sideways instead of upright?

Hi

Not recommend as it will shorten its life span and may avoid warranty etc.

Yes, that would work.
Naural convection cooling for lower power levels will be a lot less effective, so the fan may run more often or come on sooner than you expect.
