Current sensor for Multiplus II 3000 2X120V

I see the data sheet for the new Multiplus II 3000 2X120 volt lists an optional current sensor 100A:50mA. It says to see the Multiplus II manual but there is no explanation about what functionality it offers. Is it necessary to read the current on L2? Any info would be helpful.
