I am going to install a bmv-712 smart shunt in my boat.
As I understand it I have to connect the negative side of the batteries to the "Battery" side of the shunt. Am I doing something wrong if I do this (my red line)?

I agree with Markus. Run run the neg cable of the house/auxiliary battery to the neg only side of the smart shunt and let the control cable you have hooked to the start battery measure voltage and temp only. You will get state of charge of the start battery by knowing the voltage in that battery. I am assuming you have an alternator to charge the start battery.
