BMV-712 is not 5V tolerant, it is 3.3V
The easiest way to do the level shifting is with a digital isolator like SI8422. Double bonus since you get isolation as well. The 3.3V power from the BMV is enough to power its side of the isolator. The the other side of the isolator can then be 5V or 3.3V - very easy.
You could also use a resistor divider to drop the 5V to 3.3V to the BMV Rx pin, but no isolation. A 5V receiver should be fine with s 3.3V signal.
Others have reported issues with a non-isolated interface to a BMV. Best use the Victron VE.Direct USB cable. DYIs work sometimes and not other times.
