Multiplus shuts down overnight with a light load when batteries hit 70%

  • My multiplus system with 6 big healthy battle borne lithium batteries shuts down overnight when the batteries hit only 70% with a light load (pulling about 200 watts to a laptop, hard drive & some lights)

How can I stop this? I can only run my batteries to 70%? This seems like a setting I should be able to change. I have 6 big solar panels on my RV that bring the 6 big battle borne batteries right back to 100% quickly when the sun comes back.

The whole point of this lithium system is light night usage. Frustrating. I’ve been commuting long & running my tesla down to 30% daily for 8 years and it still runs strong. It seems like a lot of people are having these problems with Victron systems shutting down unexpectedly. Awfully fragile systems, no?

@Terbano

As an end user i can say from experience - No not fragile. There have been some pretty big "events" from user errors in our system and external causes and the Victron has lived. For sure at least one of them should have killed it.

What I have seen is it is what you are able to to with with a Victron system makes setting it up needing a bit of care and sometimes takes a bit of tweaking to get it customized to what you want.

You can actually program the Victron to shut down at certain SOC so it may be that. Or if your method of SOC is not calibrated properly, this can also cause problems. It can also be set to switch off under certain loads to power save and not have parasite draws kill the battery.

It is also possible one battle born is not getting the charge it needs and so is out of balance from the rest in the bank a common problem in built banks.

So we need more info to help you. What are your battery settings? What are you using for SOC? is it a 12v system?

More info please!

Hi Alexandra, thank you so much gor your response.
here are my settings:

AC input 1: Shore Power

AC input 2: not available

Battery Monitor: Automatic

Auto Selected: BMV-712 Smart On VE Direct

Synchronize VE.Bus SOC with Battery: Off

Use solar charger current to improve VE. Bus SOC: On

Solar Charge voltage control: off

Solar Charge current control: off

Has DC system: on

Thoughts?

Thank You

My SOC is the BMV-712 Smart

I believe it’s 12V?

Additional:

The sun is now out, my charge is up to 75,5% and the Multiplus State is still ‘Off’

Input current limit: 20

DC Voltage: 12.80V

DC Current: 0.0 Amps

State of charge: 75.5% (isn’t this plenty?)

Active input: AC IN1

Do you have a GX device (like Cerbo GX or Color Control GX)?

List the relevant battery settings for all your devices (screenshots are better).

Hi seb71, thank you so much for your reply. Did my previous screenshots in reply to Alexandra suffice?

Not enough. But I see a battery voltage of 12.81V with a small load (6.4A) and SOC 73%. 12.81V means 3.20V cell voltage. That is much lower than 73% SOC.

Use VictronConnect and make screenshots with Battery settings from the solar charger and the BMV.

Using VRM, download the inverter settings and upload them here. Or, if you have a Mk3-USB interface, connect to the inverter using that and VE Configure 3 and put screenshots with inverter settings. Any assistants loaded in the inverter (such as ESS)?

Do you have DVCC enabled in CCGX?

What device is set as battery monitor in CCGX? Should be BMV-712 Smart.

@Terbano

I think seb71 is onto something here. The bmv has lost sync or is badly programmed.

There is plenty on victrons youtube about setting up correctly.

And the issue is common enough where even battle born have a page.

Thank you seb71, and Alexandria, I will upload the screenshots you requested and check both if I have DVCC enabled in CCGX and if I have the BmV set as the battery monitor

More soon
