overpaneling Victron MPPT 150/60

Hi

I am pretty sure this is an east one, but I want to be extremely sure about it.

I just bought a Victron MPPT 150|60 -tr controller

I've read the manual and I know a couple of things:

1. 150VOC is a hard limit, I cannot exceed this by any number or I risk burn down the controller

2. at 24v system my Nominal PV power would be 1720W

so, knowing this, I am using this type of panels

Pmax 455W

VOC 49.8V

Vmp 41.2

lmp 11.05

lsc 11.6a

for sure I am installing 2 units of 455w panels in series, so I would have 910W and 99.6VOC, this is a very safe bet regarding the max VOC of 150 in the MPPT Controller. But I think this controller would be under utilized.

so, here lie my issues:

I cannot use 3 panels in series because, even though I would have 1365W and this is way under the 1720w max, and it wouldn't be a problem, VOC would be 149.4VOC which is dangerously close to the 150VOC max, and , even though in my region we do not have temps under the 16 Celsius, it's still too risky and I won't do that.

In that circumstance, I have to go the next scenario

String # 1

2 panels of 455W and 49.8VOC in series = 910W and 99,6 VOC

String # 2

2 panels of 455W and 49.8VOC in series = 910W and 99,6 VOC

The I would parallel both strings having 1820W and 99.6VOC, I still comply with the 150VOC max of the controller, but the max watts goes 100W over

My question to you experts of Victron, would the 1820W damage my controller or I would be good doing so? I know I probably won't get anything near to that since no panel is 100% efficient, but i want to be double sure.

thanks in advance

Over-panelling by 30% is common on the MPPT calculator https://www.victronenergy.com/mppt-calculator which should be used to confirm all configs.

As long as Isc isn't exceeded there isn't an issue being above the 30% recommendation.

Thanks @nickdb

I tried to use the calc, but there are two values I don't get

V temp. coeff. [%/°C] puting all tother values it alwas stay in -0.350

I temp. coeff. [%/°C]: puting all tother values it alwas stay in 0.040

leaving those two values untouched, I goit these results

PV input voltage
MPPT max. input voltage 150 V
MPPT min. input voltage @ mpp 30 V

Output current
MPPT max. output current 60 A
PV max. current @ MPP min. temp. 60 A
* Power limiting @ low temp.
PV max. current @ MPP max. temp. 56.9 A

PV power ratio 106% (oversized)

it seems pretty good i guess

but my doubt is those two values, where do i find them? are they calculated?

El mppt no se dañará. Limitará a 60 amperios la salida.

  • In this case the MPPT will not have any problems, it will just "ignore" the extra watts coming from the panels. They will not be used, but probably most of the time the panels will produce less anyway ;)
