Upgrade or not

Hi community,

At home I have a Sunnyboy, a SmartSolar MPPT RS 450/100, a MultiPlus-II GX 48/5000/70-48 and a BYD Premium LVL battery.

I always like to keep all my software on the latest stable version. But for the Multiplus I've been reading lots of opinions to upgrade or not.

Yes, my setup works perfect, no issues. But maybe in the future an app will require some version. Upgrading from a very old version might cause issues itself.

So why not keep the Multiplus on the latest version? Running V497, on the VRM portal V552 is the latest.

Thanks.

Do you constantly update the GX to the latest version? The firmware of the Multi is only one part.

Most new functionality (from an app/VRM perspective) is derived from the GX.

Sometimes there are dependencies on the multi firmware but this is not all that often, so it pays to study release notes.

If it isn't broken and you don't need anything new, then you can stay where you are.

4.97 is quite old now, personally I would have moved to v5 by now.

I constantly beta test, but my inverters are still on 5.10 and I have no intention of moving and there is no loss of new capabilities.

If you are going to leap forward, make sure you do everything: GX, Multi and Chargers.

Please read the process docs and release notes carefully, and remember you will need to reload your config on the Multi.

EDiT. Always be aware of how to rollback, and make sure you have the necessary tools, software, old versions and a backup config. Nothing worse than getting stuck in a tough spot.

Yes, everything else is up to date. I’m also using NodeRed. The Multiplus is the only one not up to date.

I do have backup files, screenshots and a MK3-USB interface just in case.

@Diederik

Unless there is a feature you want (or a grid code you need) leave it well enough alone especially with AC coupled PV.

The issue with FW updates is usually when the GX is updated but the rest isn't. And the sunny boy page hasn't been updated in a while...

There is just more to it than a simple do or don’t decision. Alex raised an important consideration of third party/untested devices which beta testing may not have considered. The firmware in these devices is also relevant.

For most users the process is straightforward and uneventful, but the potential permutations in the victron ecosystem is significant and the related risk in experiencing an issue increases.

I would never encourage an update for update sake, and a conservative approach always pays off.

Let everyone else find the bugs first.

No the opposite. If you have half updated - which you said you have in your answer to nickdb- go the whole way.

Don't forget the battery fW as well

I was ready for the update. Backup files, screenshots, etc...

In the process of updating I came to this warning. The GX device should not loose power in the process of updating.

Since I have a MultiPlus II-GX, the GX devices is integrated and will loose power.

Am I right?

What to do?

P.S. Upload screenshot failed. Parse error???
