Generator auto start cycling on and off

I have a multi plus II 48/5000 with generator start stop assistant running. I have the assistant set to start the generator when the system reads 48 volts for 3 minutes and to stop after 30 mins of float charge. The generator start is cycling in and out every few minutes. Are there any additional settings outside of the assistant that will remedy this issue?

Hello @MrShuggman . I wonder if this system has ever worked in the past or is it a new system you are trying to get operating? If it is a new system could you please advise what type of generator you are using. Many thanks.....

It is a new system we're trying to get operating. Was set up about 6-8 months ago with a 250/100 PV charger and the multi plus II running the generator assistant. It's only since the recent shorter days that the generator start has been called for as the PV has been maintaining the battery bank.

The generator is a McCulloch 8kVA diesel unit.

I am not sure about the McCulloch but some generators like Kohler or Cummins require a pulse to start and a pulse to stop. It may be worth investigating what the remote start configuration is designed for with the McCulloch to ensure that a simple relay closure is sufficient to do the job. It is a bit hard to suggest a way forward as I cannot find reference to it online.

Hi Trevor,

The auto start function on the generator is definitely a 2 wire dry contact start. We're able to start and stop it using a simple switch to bridge the generator start terminals. I've also checked that the inverter relay is closing during the 'generator start' condition and it is behaving as expected. It seems to be a programming issue from what I can determine. It's worth mentioning I am a qualified sparky so have done my due diligence regarding the physical operation of everything.

Does the system have a CerboGX or EkranoGX control panel? Controlling the autostart via the relays on these devices gives you more control and visibility of what is happening.
