Setting up remote development using VS Code

I'm trying to set up remote development on Venus OS running on a Pi3B, using Visual Studio Code. Normally the Remote SSH plugin for VS Code makes this easy, but it's running into issues when setting up the environment on the Venus system due to its use of BusyBox instead of a regular shell. Has anyone had any success getting this set up correctly?
