Problem with charging

Hello,

I have recently installed a Orion-Tr Smart DC DC charger in addition to the batteries for a bowthruster, it was done by a certified installer. However, when i run the engines none of my original batteries are being charged from the generator, and also not the ones connected to the above charger. Yanmar replaced the generator last Friday under warranty but did not test it....the problem still exist. Can the charger has something to do with this? When I'm on shore power everything works normally.

The Orion install should not stop the battery charging from the engine, I assume you mean engine alternator. The problem is likely to be something like an isolator has been turned off or fuse removed on the charging circuit or a cable disconnected during the work. Really you need to get your installer back. If you have some knowledge and a digital multimeter you can check for voltage at the alternator. Typically, you should have battery voltage at the positive terminal of the alternator even if the engine is not running and check all cables, isolators and fuses. I assume you have standard alternator and not a controller like the Balmar, WS500 or Zeus.

Thanks for your reply.

The engine is a Yanmar 3JH40.

During the check up/trouble shooting they found out that the generator only produced 5 Volt during engine operation. Interesting that you mention the voltage on the generator because it should be at least the same as on the batteries of course. I was thinking that perhaps the DC DC charger somehow made the alternator to not charge because it was considered peak Voltage at the batteries.
