I have currently have six 450W EGE panels in three strings of two panels each and would like to replace them with Jinko Tiger Pro 550W panels. The Tiger Pro panels have an indicated Voc of 49.62V in STC and 46.84V in NOCT. The question is whether I can run these panels in 2 strings of three or would I be pushing the limits of potential damage to the MPPT. Three panels in series would equate to 148.86 in NOCT. See below.
Take a look at the temp coefficient of Voc. You don't say what your lowest temperature is, but with the increase as temps drop, you will blow the controller with two strings of 3 with a small temperature drop.
You'll see an increase in voltage around 1.4V for a temp drop of 3-4C below 25C.
There is no margin whatsoever.
@Stingerb https://www.victronenergy.com/mppt-calculator now has a improved search function in a large database of solar panels where you can simply pick your panel and play around with various configurations.Three in series won't fly and exceed max 150V at low temps as kevgermany explained.
