What is better, one 400W panel or four 100W panels?
I have an apartment. Accordingly, the place of installation of panels is limited. I want to use the free space effectively.

My advise is to start from the limitation, t.e. the space. See what you are able to place within your premise and then think about possible configurations (series and parallel modules) together with the charge controller that can accommodate the setup (in terms of Voc).
In some cases more small modules can be better to cope with partial shading (if in parallel), however performing generally worse in good light conditions compared to one big panel or several smaller modules in series.
There would be several ways to place PV panels, the easiest way probably would be something like this.
