Battery Charging

Motorhome Avida Longreach has a Quattro 3000, MPPT 100/50 Charger, Smart Shunt, Color Control GX and a GX LTE -4G SA GPS fitted with 400 watts of solar on the roof.

The problem - the color control will read that the battery is 65% charged first thing in the morning. When the sun gets onto the solar panels and starts charging 20 - 30 watts, the Color controller GX battery reading change’s from 65% charged to 100% NO GRADUATED READINGS to fully charged and the 3 AGM Batteries are at 11.7 volts But reads 100%.

On a good sunny day the batteries are fully charged to 13.4 volts after 4 to 5 hours And the Color Control GX has been on at 100% all the time.

the Color Control GX settings Battery Monitor is set to Smart Shunt. Also getting a Connection Error #153 Connection error.

Can you post a screenshot of the SmartShunt settings from the Victron Connect APP? Sounds like the smartshunt isn't configured correctly.

The only time the smart shunt will be accurate is when it synchronizes at absorption voltage and tail current, i.e., 100% SoC. It does not factor voltage into % charge at all.


A smart shunt power loss can force a 100% reading depending on settings.


If you're only getting your battery to 13.4V, then you're nowhere near fully charged, and you haven't synchronized in a long time, thus your smartshunt accuracy is way off. Typical AGM are fully charged at 14.2-14.8V depending on manufacturer.


If this is normal operation for you, then you have been damaging your batteries every single day you failed to fully charge them. You likely have way too little solar for your daily consumption and are using your AGM batteries in the lower to mid range of their state of charge, which damages them.


Recommend you immediately take all necessary measures to fully charge your battery in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

An SOC sync can falsely occur if the battery voltage is above the "charged" threshold and the charging current drops below the tail threshold. This can happen when clouds block the sun. Just a thought.
