2022: Can Venus OS be installed on Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W now?

It has been discussed earlier whether Venus OS can work on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W. Has there been any changes in 2022? Is it still impossible?

Would be keen to get this working too. I only want to monitor 1 MPPT, the Pi Zero 2 W would be perfect.

I have it working on PI Zero 2 W since march 2022, Venus OS version "venus-raspberrypi-Zero2W-v2.85_1.rootfs.img.gz" and works without any issues, just perfect. Confirmed by me.

Yes this is working with the latest 2.90 beta. See release notes

It has not been widely tested so there may be some issues.

Wifi and Bluetooth need patching still I think. See other posts for more info and links.

I'm unable to get wifi & bluetooth working too. The Pi identifies as "Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W Rev 1.0". I've tried both v3.00~22 and v2.93. I can only access with VictronConnect if I add an ethernet dongle. Also, somehow I'm unable to gain ssh access: port 22 isn't accessible from the outside.

This part from dmesg seems ominous:

[ 10.075774] Bluetooth: hci0: command 0xfc18 tx timeout
[ 18.395783] Bluetooth: hci0: BCM: failed to write update baudrate (-110)
[ 20.475779] Bluetooth: hci0: command 0x0c03 tx timeout
[ 28.635789] Bluetooth: hci0: BCM: Reset failed (-110)

EDIT: I figured it out, see https://community.victronenergy.com/questions/144249/no-wifi-on-pi-zero-2w-venus-os-v29016-and-14.html?childToView=192441#comment-192441

And in case others struggle with SSH access. It's not intuitive to enable, and it's explained here: https://www.victronenergy.com/live/ccgx:root_access#root_access

@mapeje The issue has a v3.10 milestone on it: https://github.com/victronenergy/venus/issues/1063 . I guess @mvader (Victron Energy) is on it :)

The issue is marked as resolved, but I don't know if the fix is in v3.10~2

This will be in a 3.10 beta. However there is no release candidate available for 3.10 yet. If there was something would have been posted to the community forum and it would be listed in the releases notes. Therefore this is in an internal build at this time.

There was already a 3.10~2 beta out in the forums, but that didn't have this change. But now 3.10~8 is out, and the change is in there! Great work @Bathnm ! --> https://community.victronenergy.com/questions/210133/venus-os-v3102-available-for-testing.html

Is it also possible to update the Bluetooth BlueZ stack from 5.55 to 5.66?

The 5.55 is nearly 3 years old.

I just tried migrating from a Raspi2 to a Zero 2 W. I connected a USB- and LAN Hub to the device and just exchanged the SD Card right as it was.

Venus OS booted and everything looked working, at first. However, the update of the web interface is very slow and my Daly BMS, which I got working with an added driver, lost it's connection from time to time.

So, in the end I had to get back to the Raspi2 and it continued working as fast as I was used to, showing none of any connection problems anymore.

However, the two Victron Solar Chargers I also had connected did not loose their connection. So, if it's only about them, it might work. For anythin else I recomment a "decent" Pi, as long as you are able to get one.

It would be interesting what the CPU load was on the Zero 2W. Let it run for about 30 minutes and then check with uptime the load (1/5/15). Looks like this:

09:13:39 up 1 day, 23:38, load average: 0.40, 0.56, 1.02

I just did a remote upgrade of my self-patched VenusOS 2.93 to 3.10 now. I know, I know, I shouldn't do that, but my cabin is not a critical installation :)

Anyway, it worked great! Everything works as expected
