Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Charger Input Ground

Hi,

I have an Orion TR-smart DC-DC 12/12 30amp isolated charger in a van.

I have a 6gauge positive wire run from the starting battery to a fuse, then to the back of the van and to the positive input of the Orion.

Do I also need to run a 6 gauge ground wire directly from the battery (entire length of the van) to the negative input on the Orion charger, or is it sufficient to ground the negative input to the chassis at the back of the van?

  • Assuming around a 12' run 1-way your v-drop with 6-AWG is under 5% (calculator )
  • Well grounded metal vehicle frame will have likely far less resistance
  • If that v-drop can be readily accommodated (I would guess)
  • And nothing else on that common ground needs less volts, then..
  • You should be good with 6-AWG to the frame. Use star washers and make a bare metal spot for your Orion ground.

...unless the Orion uses some kind of special highly sensitive voltage sense -but it should still work!
