Integrating Two Victron Batteries into Existing Lithium Battery Bank

Hello,

I currently have a 400Ah lithium battery bank in my van, made up of Battle Born 12V 100Ah batteries. I was recently given two Victron 12V 180Ah batteries, and I’m hoping to integrate them into my existing system.

My plan is to keep the Battle Borns as my primary bank and set up the two Victron batteries as a separate bank in a different location (due to space constraints). I envision this second bank acting as an "overflow" system:

  1. Charging: When my primary Battle Born bank is fully charged, the excess power from my solar, alternator, or inverter would start charging the secondary Victron bank. I’m thinking of wiring the new battery bank off my main 12V DC positive and negative busbars.

  2. Discharging: The secondary Victron bank would then supply power back to the primary Battle Born bank only when the primary bank needs to be recharged. This way, the Victron bank would function similarly to an additional charging source (like solar or alternator) for the primary bank.

I’m seeking advice on how to set this up or whether it’s feasible with my current equipment. Could I use a Victron Orion DC-DC charger to achieve this? Would I need two of them—one for each direction of charging? Are there any specific components or configurations you’d recommend to make this work effectively? Any other way you would achieve integrating the two new batteries into the system? Or is this just a crazy idea?

@mattr Are these Victron batteries the Smart Lithium or the Superpack. The Smart Lithium do not have a BMS and need an external BMS. The Superpack type have internal BMS. From your 180Ah figure I believe they are Smart Lithium so read up on the Victron eeb site about these batteries and BMSs. You could wire them as a parallel bank with Orion DC to DC chargers in both directions and turn these on manually when required. For a simple system the Victron small BMS would work with ATC and ATD outputs connected to the remote control inputs of the Orions in case of over or under voltage BUT the system would not have a disconnect as a fall back.

They are the Smart Lithium batteries and knew they did not have an internal bms so I was planning on using either the Small BMS or the VE.Bus BMS V2. Can you explain what you are talking about here a little more: "For a simple system the Victron small BMS would work with ATC and ATD outputs connected to the remote control inputs of the Orions in case of over or under voltage BUT the system would not have a disconnect as a fall back."

@mattr The VE Bus BMS needs the BMS to be connected to a Victron VE Bus inverter so I do not think that this is suitable for a small standalone parallel system that is not integrated into an existing system. The small BMS manual has examples of connecting the ATC/ ATD (allow to charge/ allow to discharge) ports to chargers and loads so these would connect to the DC to DC chargers to either stop them charging or discharging if the voltage or temperature is too high or too low. What I mean by the system does not have a disconnect is that normally the BMS has a means of isolating the batteries on very high or very low voltage such as a contactor in the Lynx BMS, or in a drop in battery with internal BMS it has FETS (electronic switches) to isolate the battery. Using the Small BMS with just the ATC/ ATD to the DC to DC chargers leaves them live but turned off via software, if there was a problem with the control wiring or a failure in one of the DC chargers then the battery could still charge or discharge to the point of damage. You can connect the ATC/ ATC signals to a Cyrix breaker instead which would provide definitive isolation.
