Venus Updates - lack of clarity

screenshot-from-2024-07-18-13-50-29.png

So which image path to download fro Cerbo: Cerbosgx or einstein? A little text to guide would help here... Usually I download fro BB or pi, those are obvious.

Also: Should the file system of the sd card be visible once the image is extracted to it? the three images I've tried so far do not show any disk structure...

Also documentation for installing firmware says to download the .swu file. Surely this is an update, and not a full image?

einstein is for Cerbo GX

beaglebone is for Venus GX

raspberrypi2 is for PI 2 and 3

Others should be obvious.

The .wic files are complete disk images. I open them on my Mac by changing the extension to .img. There is a FAT32 partition and two ext4 partitions. So you need an ext file extension to show them.

I have been unable to open the .swu files even following suggestions from several here and even trying on Ubuntu.

Hi,

Some additions:

1) opening a .swu file is totally unnecessary for any normal use including GX device recovery.

2) .wic and .wic.gz files are for rasbperrypi’s only; they are to install Venus OS on an sdcard, and then running it from that sdcard in a Pi. Which is not the same as how things work on the other GX devices, that don’t boot and operate from an sdcard.

Hi,

To do a normal firmware update, you need .swu files and follow the instructions in the manual.

For a normal Cerbo GX that is here:

https://www.victronenergy.com/media/pg/Cerbo_GX/en/firmware-updates.html#UUID-252d3141-4d5b-ba2a-9303-195ca67d506e

For the Cerbo-S GX that is here:

https://www.victronenergy.com/media/pg/Cerbo-S_GX/en/firmware-updates.html

For the Cerbo and Cerbo MK2 its the Einstein folder.

For the Cerbo-S GX its the cerbosgx folder.

I’ll see where and how we can make that more clear - thanks!

For a normal firmware update there is no need to extract anything. A swu file is a binary file that you can put on the sdcard or usb stick and that will be read & installed onto the built-in flash memory in the GX device.

Re-installing Venus OS is a different story, and documented in the troubleshooting section of the GX manuals. Here is that chapter for the Cerbo GX:
