Problems with Multiplus network priorities

Hi all,

I just installed my new multiplus II GX and connected it to my wifi network. Works fine. Via wifi it is also connected to an openDTU and collects data from the DTU.

For the ESS setup I bought an EM24 ethernet (needed about 7-8m cable so i didn't get the rs485 version). I wanted to connect the EM24 ethernet to the ethernetport of the multiplus with a static and direct point to point connection. No routers, no inthernet and no other devices inside this network.

This also worked fine.

My Problem is now, when I start the Victron apperently it prioritieses the LAN conneciton over the WIFI (I found this also in the manual). Now I can't ping the multiplus anymore, can't get a ssh connection and the DTU data are not displayed anymore. As soon as i diconnect the LAN cable to the EM24 everything comes back.

Any Ideas how to solve that issue?

Suggestion (assuming WiFi router has an ethernet port, most do)

Disconnect the multiplus from WiFi.

Put in an ethernet hub

Put a cable connection from the WiFi router to the ethernet hub

Connect multiplus to ethernet hub

Connect EM24 to ethernet hub.

Thanks for the reply.

My wifi router is in a complete different room. There is no possibility for a cable connection to my regular network.

I already thought about setting up a wifi bridge next to the EM24 and connect both devices to it. But that would mean another extra piece of hardware and additional traffic on this line as it would not be a private network between EM24 and multiplus anymore.

I don't see the point of using the EM24 ethernet if you still have a direct P2P connection to the GX device.

You could have also just extend the RS485 cable.

The RS485 connection is way more stable and you could have used the new EM540 instead.

The longest cable i could order for rs485 was 5m.

Messing with cable length can leed to new problems like EMC issues. Ethernet supports length like 10m without any problems and I don't see why a clean LAN connection should be less stable.

Also i couldn't find any informations about extending the cable is a suitable solution.

Victron offers the EM24 as a solution for this combination. So i expect it to be stable aswell.

RS485 can be extended over 300meters, with good quality cable.

10/20m on for instance a cat5 cable is no problem at all

Victron says that you can extend it up to 100m.

I'm not sure but I think the longest we did was 10 or 15m without any issues.

never the less i would still need to change my complete setup and send back the energymeter that i already have.

I think i might just upgrade the LAN that is connected to the victron to be part of my home network. Most likly with a power to lan adapter. that should do the trick...

thanks for the help anyways
