What does the blue common connection look like in real life? Do you attach to either the +/- on the center connection? Or do you need a terminal post to make sure connection is truly in center of the wire?

Can connect to either side. That said, there's almost always a minor difference on the legs of mine, usually about 0.1% - 0.3%.
