Very unbalanced Smart battery 200-a don't want to balance fully

Hi all,

I've recently gotten 6 new batteries to expand by battery bank, one of them was severely out of balance.

I of course, first pre-charged all the batteries and let them balance for a night. Next day without verifying everything was fully balanced i deployed them into the setup.

The first discharge cycle that day caused a under voltage pre alarm while the SoC of the bank was 44%.

The voltages of this battery were

I immediately started a full charge cycle on the whole bank and let it balance for 2 more hours as the bank afterward returned to float and that is too low voltage for cell balancing to continue.

This did not make any significant progress on the cells, so I decided to take this one out of the battery bank to manually charge and balance. The maximum charge current was set to 8A

This is how the cells looked after reaching the absorption phase

This was a couple of hours later, progress, although it being slow.

2 and half days later, it looked like this

4 days later from start, pretty good.

But this is where we are getting stuck. 5 days later (so 9 days from start). Not much progress (for 5 days difference at least)

Any recommendations? Or should I try and do a full cycle on this battery. Is it normal that these batteries can come this imbalanced? I did, of course, update all to the latest firmware.

Hi @Marco Nijholt,

It is possible, though unfortunate, and you’re doing the right thing. I am seeing good progress there even though slow.

It’s a really good idea to keep as many copius notes and records (as it looks like you’re doing) in case the issue does not fully resolve and it needs a warranty claim. But I think as you continue, and as the battery gets time to cycle in the normal range in the long run that it should be ok.

Any recommendation on staying in the active or passive cell balancing range?

And I assume it can only balance 1 cell at a time?

I had similar issues on a Victron 200 lithium as well.

I think the balance current is one or two amps, so if one cell is at a lower voltage, then only a small extra? current will flow into that cell.

I had a spare victron lithium charger which was set to one amp of current and left it on the battery for two days, turning it off at night.

Battery balance got better, then I fitted the battery into the system and let it cycle normally.

After a few cycles, cell balance was all even.

The battery is still not balanced, I've done 3 manual balancing attempts over the past months. And left it running in the system after each balancing attempt.

Unfortunately, it still does not want to balance and basically gives me a 25% less battery capacity on my 82kwh battery bank. As around 25% SoC the loads will disconnect notification starts appearing due to low cell voltage alarm.

Do I RMA directly with the store, I bought it from? (https://www.berger-camping.nl/).

Or directly with victron? Could literally drop it off in Almere.
