Do I need a Grid isolation switch to use easy solar and generator

Hi,

With predicted winter costs of electricity in uk set to reach £1 kw this winter, it seems to me that it is worthwhile running a generator to charge batteries through an Easy solar with panels. As the panels will likely be insufficient in winter, the generator will be run for a couple of hours a day. The grid will not "fail" as such to switch to the generator. To make this work wil it be correct to install a mains switch to manually isolate the grid and switch on the generator . Looking at 6kva generator, Easy solar 5kva. Many thanks in advance , Jamie

Estimating your generator fuel cost at gbp5/l this gives you a generated fuel cost of gbp 1.67 / kWh. use the grid to top up your battery, not the generator - it is more carbon efficient too.

Yes you would need to isolate the grid from your system, and then wire to the generator. A proper transfer switch should be installed if this is a regular change-over.
