I'm planning my electrical installation - someone pointed out that connecting the negatives of the mppt directly to the battery means I cant monitor the input of the solar panels, so should i connect these directly to the common negative bus?

Not sure how you're expecting to monitor this, nothing is shown. If you add a smartshunt or BMV, this must be the only connection to battery negative, connect everything to the neg bus and from there to the load side of the shunt. But this will only give battery info, not at MPPT level.
The MPPTs will each output their data to Victron connect or a GX device if you intend to have one.
