ESS how can direct consumption of DC-coupled PV be prioritised

Hi all,

in my system (Ess, 1xMultiplus 5000, 2x Smart Solar, DC-PV, 620Ah OpsZ 48V) i noticed, that my battery is being charged every morning, while my AC consumtion is taken from the grid at the same time. I would prefer to minimize charging/ discharging losses and consume directly from PV whenever possible.

ESS is activated. Minimal SOC of 60%, no battery live.

Any hints on what i can change?

Thanks in advance,

Direct use of the PV before charging batteries is the normal expected behaviour, so something here is not operating normally.

Are all the components of the system running the latest firmware versions?

Thanks for your quick answer, Venus v.2.66, Multiplus is FW 481, BMV is v3.11 and Smart Chargers are v1.56.

So maybe i have to update first. I thought it was maybe some obvious bad setting.

Indeed, current versions are

Venus 2.82

MultiPlus 494

Smart Chargers 1.59

When updating the MultiPlus the settings will be wiped, so when it is being reconfigured with the ESS assistant, I would pay very close attention to the sustain voltage setting that is programmed. You might find that is set high enough that it is preventing discharge to your selected stage of charge setting, and then also drawing the solar as priority before supplying the loads again.

I discharge my battery down to SOC 5% and in the morning ESS is also loading the first few watts into the battery because the battery is marked with "#1 SOC low".

After reaching SOC about 8-9% or a "noteworthy" PV-power it goes into the AC-Out and only the rest in the battery.

It is strange that your system does this with 83,4% SOC....something wrong here.

Good morning,

yesterday i updated all components. (Smart Chargers and Multiplus, ESS- Assistant) Venus seems to be up to date. Still, the battery is not used to cover the load. Minimum SOC is set to 60%. However, the battery is not dicharged below 70%.

But even if the battery is not being discharged for some reason, i would expect the PV power to partly cover my load.

I gues i might have a bad config on the ESS assistant.

I would check what voltage the battery is reaching and what the ESS sustain voltages are set to.

You may have the wrong voltage settings in ESS for your battery and you are hitting voltage thresholds before SOC minima.

Minimum SOC is set to 60%. However, the battery is not discharged below 70%.

Is your ESS "optimized with battery life"?

If yes, what is "Active SOC limit" when you see that the battery would not discharge below 70%.

"Optimized with battery life" is not activated....

It looks as if there is some kind of hysteresis that charges the battery to a certain SOC after reaching the lower soc limit and then starts to operate as expected. When the chargers are in float- mode, PV-Input is used to cover the load.

Now, when the SOC exceeded 77,0%, the operation switches and grind is controllen to 0W, Load is fed from PV..

Still no idea what is wrong. Yesterday, my PV did not cover any load at all. Only the battery has been charged. . Same Problem right now.

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Just to close my monologue.

After updating also the Multiplus firmware and setting up the whole ESS system again, everything works fine.

2022-02-18-10h41-53.pngHi Mathis, nice to hear problem is solved after the update.

Just to add this, because it seems you stated above that the behaviour started every morning (same time? AND it stopped at 77% SOC exactly).:
Did you by accident activate the "planned charging" on ESS, which is now overwritten by new configuring and updates?

Best regards

Alex
